Anonymous Father's Day Movie Viewing | August 28
Thousands of donor-conceived people have a deep longing to know who they belong to, where they come from, and who they look like. Donor-conceived people are demanding answers to these basic questions about their origins, their lives, and their identities. The movie "Anonymous Father's Day," produced by The Center for Bioethics and Culture, explores the stories of women and men who are the children of sperm donors.

This movie will be shown at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 520 Stevens St., Indianapolis, on Friday, August 28, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free, and a simple supper will be served. To register, contact Sheryl Dye at [email protected] or 317-407-6881.The Pro-Life Film Series is sponsored by the Holy Rosary Church Pro-Life Ministry and the Sanctity of Life Committee of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

A Decisive Hour in the History of our Nation and Church

    7/7/2015

Dear St. John Parishioners and Friends,

Peace be with you! As we celebrate our independence and freedoms this weekend, perhaps there is a bitter-sweet feeling in our hearts. On one hand we are deeply grateful to live in a nation where we can live and practice our faith without severe persecution or in the face of death. On the other hand, we see before our very eyes the destruction of those very religious foundations on which this country was built.

Just over a week ago, the definition of marriage between one man and one woman was compromised and "redefined" in America. This came as a shock to many. To others, there was no surprise as they had eyes to see what was happening in our country. To some this was a great triumph over what they deemed oppression of those who have same sex attraction.

While I was deeply disappointed in the re-writing of the definition of marriage, I was not surprised. After all, when man decides to alter what God has created and ordained as beauty, goodness and truth, all is fair game. Over 50 years ago, man began to take the reins from God (He gave us free will) on the gift of family and fruitful multiplication of children. Contraception led to break down of the family and openness to God. Contraception made men less accountable and free to live passions of the body rather than be sacrificial and virtuous. Contraception formed an attitude of relativism (rampant in our culture today), rather than a culture which sought higher ways of living in and through God and His created beauty stamped in our very bodies.

Eventually, we began to see the breakdown of family, authentic manhood and womanhood, marriage and faith. Contraception was a slippery slope that has led to legalized abortion and the slaughter of our nation's children (approximately one-fourth of our sisters and brothers) since 1973! This contraceptive mentality has since led to many compromises including redefining marriage. Please read Humanae Vitae, an encyclical written by Pope Paul VI on human life to all people of good will on the regulation of birth. This is an excellent guide for all Catholics concerning life and love designed by God for us as His children.

The good news is that Love, God, does win in the end. The Church stands firm and true to our Lord and His Word in Sacred Scripture and Tradition. The Church stands true to God's definition of marriage. Please read Archbishop Tobin's letter which can be found on our website here:http://www.stjohnsindy.org/st-john-blog/archbishop-tobin-responds-to-same-sex-marriage-ruling I would also encourage those who struggle with the Church's teaching of marriage to dig deeper and read more about why we believe that God ordained marriage to be between one man and one woman. Some great resources include:
    • www.usccb.org (Marriage)
    • From Love, For Love, By Love (Podcast by Father Mike Schmitz)http://www.lighthousecatholicmedia.org/store/title/from-love-by-love-for-love
    • Catechism of the Catholic Church (Sacrament of Marriage)
    • Adult Catechism of the Catholic Church (Sacrament of Marriage)
    • www.foryourmarriage.org (Various authentic Catholic Resources on Marriage)
    • Absolute Relativism - The New Dictatorship (By Chris Stefanick)

My friends, this is a decisive hour in the history of our nation and Church. I would ask that you pray daily for our Holy Father, Pope Francis. His visit to Philadelphia in September could be a great moment for our nation to receive the beauty, goodness and truth of marriage and family. Let us pray that he guides us with clarity and boldness so that all people of good will find the Church to be a guiding light in the years to come.

Let us thank God for all of our freedoms this Independence Day, especially the freedom of religion!

In the Spirit of St. John the Evangelist,
    Father Rick Nagel

Archbishop Tobin responds to same-sex marriage ruling

    6/29/2015

On June 27, Archbishop Joseph Tobin responded to the US Supreme Court Same-Sex marriage ruling.  See below for the full letter from our Archbishop or visit the Archdiocesan site here: http://www.archindy.org/archbishop/scotus-2015.html

From Archbishop Tobin, published June 27:
The Supreme Court of the United States of America published a decision on June 26, 2015 to redefine marriage in a fundamental way. This decision does not change the truth that is older than states and courts. The Catholic Church, along with other faith traditions, teaches that marriage is a natural institution established by God to be a permanent union between one man and one woman, intended towards the formation of a family in which children are born and nurtured.

The ruling is not surprising in light of the number of states in which courts have recognized same-sex marriage as well as rapidly changing attitudes in American popular culture regarding the nature of marriage. The Catholic community has long recognized values that distinguish its understanding of marriage from the legal definition. Those differences have become more acute.

So where do we go from here?

The Catholic Church will continue to teach and preach the truth that marriage is a union of one man and one woman and encourage all people of good will to embrace the fullness of that truth. We will work to promote and strengthen marriage and families. We will strive to uphold the dignity of every human person, including persons who experience same-sex attraction, welcoming them as our brothers and sisters.

The decision of the Supreme Court is an invitation to Catholics to proclaim the Gospel that sets all people free. I pray the Supreme Court's decision will be an invitation for all people of good will to discuss respectfully what divides us and seek the common good of all, especially of families. I ask that those who disagree with the teachings of our Church may recognize our God-given freedom to live according to our faith and our consciences.

Join us this summer for the parish wide book study.  This time around we'll be studying Scott Hahn's "Scripture Matters."  Small groups will meet on various day, times and locations across the city.  All are welcome! To learn more or to sign up for one of the book studies contact Josh Schaffner.

    Brief Description of Book:
What is a "Catholic" approach to interpreting the Bible? What makes for good, sound biblical scholarship? What is the "fourfold sense" of Scripture and how does it relate to understanding the Bible? What perspective and insight does Saint Thomas Aquinas provide for studying the Bible? What is the place of Scripture in Church Teaching? Scott Hahn answers these and many more questions, providing a foundation for a Catholic approach to Scripture.
