Letter from Fr Nagel on Mass & Confession Changes - Published June 14, 2015
Dear Friends,
Peace be with you! For the past six months the downtown parish priests of SS. Peter and Paul, St. Mary’s, Holy Rosary and St. John’s have been working with the Archdiocesan Connected in the Spirit outreach. This was in response to a goal set by Archbishop Tobin for all of the Indianapolis area parishes to evaluate priest time and resources of staff. Our hope from this is to make a great impact on the downtown community with daily opportunities for Mass and confession.
Proposed Daily Mass Schedule at St. John’s
The Monday-Friday daily Mass schedule will stay as is with confessions at 11am and the 12:10pm daily Mass. This is a reflection of large Mass attendance and large numbers receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation and we are grateful to continue to offer this.
There will be a proposed change in the Saturday daily schedule. Holy Rosary will pick up a 10am Saturday daily Mass with confessions at 9:30am and St. John’s will plug into that Mass. Therefore there will be no 11am confessions or 12:10pm daily Mass on Saturdays at St. John’s. This allows us to offer one more slot for weddings on Saturdays.
Proposed Weekend Mass Schedule at St. John’s
In the past few years we’ve seen a tremendous increase in the number of weddings at St. John’s. This year we will have 54 wedding preps, 43 of which are parishioner weddings. There are already 17 weddings scheduled for 2016. With such a large increase in young people wanting to get married in the church we felt a great need to add another wedding time for Saturdays to provide this Sacrament. Therefore the Saturday evening vigil Mass is proposed to move from 5:30pm to 6:30pm which allows for St. John’s to have three weddings on Saturdays (10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm).
The second weekend Mass that was evaluated was the 11am Mass. In the past few years we have seen an increase in activity in the downtown, particularly Georgia Street as well as an increase in the growth of downtown leading to a move active environment around us. Generally activity on Georgia Street starts after 11am or 12pm. We have proposed moving the 11am to 10am Mass to help avoid traffic jams, parking issues and noise challenges (bands and loud PA) due to the increased activity around us from Georgia Street events, Colts game days, etc. The Sunday 8am and 7pm Masses will stay the same.
We hope these changes will impact you and the downtown community in a good way! These changes were all presented after the masses last weekend and had an overwhelming positive response. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please email me at [email protected]
