Ministry Position Posting - St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church
Director of the Emmaus Ministry– Full Time
Parish Demographics: St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, located in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana is the oldest Catholic Church in the city with roots going back to 1837 and is currently seeking to hire a full time Director of Emmaus Ministry. St. John’s is a growing parish with 2500 parishioners and 50% of its congregation comprised of young adults between the ages of 18-35. St. John’s serves six distinct demographics of people: Traditional Parishioners, Young Adults, University Students, Daily Mass Goers, Visitors to the City and Homeless Neighbors. St. John’s is intentional about “Opening Wide the Doors to Christ” to invite all people into our sacred place. This position is key in organizing this ministry on a daily basis. Ministry Description & Responsibilities: The Emmaus Ministry provides three meals a day Monday- Friday and one meal on Saturdays (with the potential to expand days/times) to those who are experiencing homelessness or food insecurity in downtown Indianapolis. This ministry has grown significantly in the past few years with 150+ volunteers. The purpose of this role is not only to provide food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty (Matthew 25: 35) but also to spiritually enrich our volunteers and those who we are serving to be Christ to the poor and receive Christ in the poor.

+ Experience in Parish Ministry/Life
+ Commitment to the Catholic faith and church teaching

Inventory Operations
- Manage and coordinate all physical donations to the Emmaus Ministry including clothing, food and hygiene supplies
- Communicating food inventory needs to volunteers and other partnering organizations
- Purchasing necessary food items from grocery stores or managing trips to organizations for inventory needs
- Creating new relationships with other resource organizations to provide our homeless neighbors with greater information
Volunteer Coordination
- Handling all communications with new volunteer inquires
- Train and lead food service volunteers to follow food safety, hospitality and spiritual enhancement guidelines
- Model the importance of building relationships with our homeless neighbors and being present to their needs with healthy boundaries
- Creating a weekly schedule for food service volunteers
- Stepping in to help serve meal shifts when the schedule is not able to be filled or a volunteer has an emergency arise
- Being present to the needs of volunteers especially in challenging situations
- Creating a schedule for the donation of hot meals, sandwiches and additional grocery items needed for the ministry
- Sending communications and thank you letters to donors and volunteers
- Coordinating all details for the annual “Neighborhood Cookout”
- Keeping an updated list of shelter and clothing resources available for our neighbors
- Updating the food service volunteer training booklet when necessary
- Researching and applying for grants that would benefit the ministry
- Communicating serving details to volunteers and recruiting lead volunteers to cover while out of office.
Health & Safety Responsibilities
- Coordinate safety training for all volunteers
- Handle safety issues which can arise with those we serve
- Work collaboratively with the Pastor, Parish Facilities Manager and IMPD on safety protocol and challenges
Spiritual Enhancement
- Conducting street ministry events and providing adequate training and support to volunteers participating in the program
- Creating content and coordinating bi-annual volunteer formation nights, providing volunteers with spiritual enhancement and direction
Parish Ministry Team Responsibilities
- Weekly Hospitality Shift for Daily Mass & Confession (collaborative effort of St. John Ministry Team)
- Meet with new parishioners to welcome them to the parish (collaborative effort of the St. John Ministry Team)
- Serve as a liaison for St. John Ministries (as assigned by Pastor)
- Other duties as assigned by Pastor
