Father Nagel’s Bulletin Column- June 23, 2013
Dear Friends of St. John,
Peace be with you! This past year we have experienced some very challenging times as Catholics living in a country founded on freedom. Our religious liberty has been violated in ways unimaginable including:
+ HHS mandate for sterilization, contraception and abortion-inducing drugs
+ Catholic foster care and adoption services
+ State immigration laws
+ Discrimination against small church congregations
+ Discrimination against Catholic humanitarian services
+ Christian students on campus
Join in the Fortnight for Freedom Prayer & Action June 21 – July 4
The United States Catholic Bishops have called us to the front lines with our most powerful weapons – PRAYER! The U.S. bishops have called for a Fortnight for Freedom, a two-week period of prayer and action (June 21- July 4), to address many current challenges to religious liberty, including the August 1, 2013 deadline for religious organizations to comply with the HHS mandate, Supreme Court rulings that could attempt to redefine marriage, and religious liberty concerns in areas such as immigration and humanitarian services. See more about these threats to freedom in the bulletin insert and at www.fortnight4freedom.org
Call to PRAYER
I encourage each of us to stand with the Church in praying to defeat these acts of dehumanization and oppression in our beautiful country. There is a daily prayer guide found at www.fortnight4freedom.org or copies can be found in the back of church (if you don’t have internet access). I would also encourage that we all join together to fight this good fight with the daily prayer of the rosary or divine mercy chaplet.
Call to MASS and ACTION
A kick off Mass will be offered on the feast day of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, June 22nd, here at St. John’s! Please take the time to join us for the 12:10 Mass and peaceful Rally to the Circle, praying for and taking action against the loss of religious liberty.
Now is the time to stand united with our Catholic Bishops and one another! Now is the time to hit our knees and storm the heavens! Now is the time to take action as a Catholic People! “To live without faith, without a patrimony to defend, without a steady struggle for truth, that is not living, but merely existing; we must never just ‘exist’.” Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati
In the Spirit of St. John,
Father Rick Nagel
